Runners needed for Brighton Marathon

Anyone interested in running the Brighton Marathon should call Amy Salter on 01622 833806. .

Kent, Surrey and Sussex Air Ambulance is appealing for runners to raise vital funds for the life-saving charity by taking part in next year’s Brighton Marathon. The ballot for individual places has now closed with a record 18,000 entries so far – a 20 per cent increase on last year. Charity places are still available for anyone who would like to take on this amazing challenge, get fit and help the Air Ambulance to save lives. Brighton Marathon will be held on April 15th, 2012, the year of the Olympics, and is now ranked among the 12 top running events in the UK. Air Ambulance Community Fundraiser Amy Salter said: “Brighton is an area where we are trying to raise our profile as many people still do not realize that we are a charity. “Having as many runners as possible in the marathon will help us to do that. It is a fantastic way to keep fit but requires a lot of training which is why we need people to sign up now. “Spaces in our team are limited so we are encouraging people who want to get fit and start training, to sign up now to secure their place. All entrants will receive a fundraising pack including sponsor forms, support and advice from the charity’s fundraising team, a training guide and an Air Ambulance running vest. Runners will also have the opportunity of attending a pre-race meeting at the Surrey and Sussex helicopter base at Dunsfold Park near Horsham. This will include a practice run and the chance to see the helicopter and meet the pilot, doctor and paramedic, subject to emergency call-outs. During the marathon, runners will be spurred along by a special Air Ambulance cheering squad armed with whistles, banners and balloons. Afterwards they will then be invited to a post-race reception and thank-you coffee morning with family and friends welcome. More than 100 runners chose to run for the Air Ambulance at last year’s second Brighton Marathon, raising almost £40,000 – enough to help save 20 lives. Each mission costs about £2,500 and the Air Ambulance relies almost entirely on voluntary public donations for its funding. Anyone interested in running the Brighton Marathon should call Amy Salter on 01622 833806.

Grandfather survives “near-fatal” wasp sting

A Cranleigh grandfather who almost died after being stung by a wasp
has thanked the emergency services who saved his life

Wasp sting survivor Robin Williams at the Surrey Air Ambulance base at Dunsfold.
Robin Williams

. Retired engineer Robin Williams, 71, had climbed a ladder to investigate a leak in the study of his home. He used a knife to lift the tiles to see if there was any water ingress when he accidentally disturbed a wasps nest. The grandfather-of-four was stung twice on his arm and finger and went into anaphylactic shock. His wife Christine, a former midwife, dialled 999 and paramedics from the South East Coast Ambulance Service (SECAmb) were first on scene. Surrey Air Ambulance was launched within just four minutes of the call and Pilot Peter Driver landed in the grounds of Park Mead Primary School. Dr Anthony Hudson and Critical Care Paramedic Adam Heywood then ran to Mr Williams’ house and gave him more treatment at the scene. Robin said: “I remember walking from the kitchen to the lounge after getting back down the ladder and that’s the last thing I remember until the life-saving crew arrived. “The treatment and care I received was second to none. The doctor explained that it was a near-death experience. “I’ve been stung many times before and the previous week I’d been stung on the thumb but had no adverse reaction other than being very uncomfortable. “I’m now slightly apprehensive when I see wasps and when I came out of hospital my daughter insisted on me staying with them until the nest had been removed.” Mr Williams was taken by land ambulance to the Royal Surrey County Hospital in Guildford, accompanied by the doctor and paramedic on the helicopter. He was discharged the next day and now carries an Epi-Pen to counter the effects of another wasp sting. The marine artist is now painting an oil picture of the Surrey Air Ambulance which can be sold off as prints to raise funds for the charity. Paramedic Adam Heywood said: “Thankfully, the land crew had begun the life-saving treatment required and we were able to compliment this with advanced interventions usually only started once the patient reaches A&E. “The speed that we were able to get to scene gave Mr Williams the best possible treatment with the minimum of delay. “This really was a good example of where the land crews and ourselves work together to achieve a common goal of excellent medical care."
If you would like to make a donation to the Air Ambulance please call 01622 833833. Alternatively cheques can be made payable to Surrey Air Ambulance and posted to Wheelbarrow Park Estate, Pattenden Lane, Marden, Kent, TN12 9QJ

PRESS RELEASE – 4/6/07

Air Ambulance Lifts Off!

A new dedicated air ambulance for Surrey is being launched on June 8
at Dunsfold Park near Cranleigh.

The Helicopter Emergency Medical Service will transport specialist doctors and critical care paramedics to the scene of medical emergencies in the County. The Air Ambulance can reach any part of the County within fifteen minutes and will help to save countless lives.

Chief Executive of the Air Ambulance, David Philpott said ' Air Ambulances, working alongside the ambulance service play a crucial part in pre hospital critical care. It is absolutely essential that in order to save more lives, we reach the patient quickly so that we can intervene and transfer to the most relevant hospital for treatment.'

Surrey was one of only a handful of counties in the country which didn't have a dedicated Air Ambulance. A successful appeal to bring the vital service to the County was launched in June 2005 raising £250,000 and enabling the charity to open the new base at Dunsfold Park.

Actress and former High Sheriff of Surrey, Penelope Keith CBE will launch the helicopter joined by several hundred guests. The new service will be operational the following day.

The Air Ambulance will cost £1.5 million a year and doesn't receive any government or national lottery funding.

Air Ambulances Rise to Road Accident Chanllege

Red helicopter above village green
London’s Air Ambulance

Charity air ambulance helicopters from across the region played a major role in dealing with a spate of road traffic accidents across the region at the weekend. The specialist medical crews of the Surrey and Essex air ambulances were all called into action to treat and fly patients to hospitals with the minimum of delay. Both the Surrey and Essex were called to a serious crash at Charing, Kent, on Saturday morning in which two young women were injured. The car in which they were travelling from Ashford left the road and collided with a tree. One girl, in her teens, was flown to the Royal London Hospital by Surrey Air Ambulance. The driver also in her teens was taken by Essex Air Ambulance to Kings College Hospital in London. The front seat passenger was taken by land ambulance to the William Harvey Hospital in Ashford and then transferred to a London hospital. No less than four helicopters went to the scene of an accident in Billingshurst, East Sussex, on Saturday evening, when three teenagers were seriously injured. They included the three charitably funded air ambulances from Kent, Sussex and London and the Sussex police helicopter. A car, in which the two women and two men, all in their late teens were travelling, was in collision with a lorry at a junction in the road. Three of the teenagers were taken to specialist hospitals in London and Essex with serious head injuries. The fourth passenger was taken to Worthing Hospital. They were all trapped in the car and had to be cut free by the Fire and Rescue Service. The lorry driver was unhurt. Director of Operations Leigh Curtis said: “This was a particularly busy weekend for our Air Ambulances and we were fortunate to be able to call on our colleagues at the Essex and London’s Air Ambulance to assist us and the land ambulance crew on scene. It was unusual to have so many helicopters in action at one time but with the number and severity of the injuries that the doctors and paramedics were dealing with it was vital.” The Air Ambulance services involved in the incidents during the weekend all fly with a specialist doctor and paramedic team who respond to serious medical emergencies. There are eighteen Air Ambulance services in England and Wales flying thirty helicopters. On average an Air Ambulance takes off every ten minutes in the UK. Air Ambulances work alongside all the emergency services but are funded almost entirely by donations from the public. Kent, Surrey & Sussex Air Ambulance update – Volcanic ash

Surrey Sussex Kent Air AmblanceLogo (Helicopter saving time saving life ) The Kent, Surrey and Sussex Air Ambulance have once again taken to the skies!
The charity’s two helicopters were grounded last Friday following reports of ash from the Icelandic volcano in the air and on the ground in Southern England. An up-date at 10.30am this morning (Monday 19 April) from the Air Ambulance’s helicopter provider has cleared both aircraft for flying but only to emergency calls.

When the decision to suspend Air Ambulance flights was taken, the specialist doctors and paramedic team immediately transferred to response cars. They have since responded to a total of thirteen emergency medical calls before the decision to resume flights.

John Tickner, Chief Executive of the Air Ambulance said ‘This situation is almost unprecedented and the decision to take the helicopter offline was a very difficult one. It is vital that we do not put either our crews or patients at risk, if there is one.
However we have to weigh this up against not providing such a critical service.
Fortunately, the decisions are ultimately made for us by experts, whose knowledge is far greater than our own. They have assured us that it is now safe to fly and we will continue to review developments.’

Charity’s financial boost

Surrey Air Ambulance received a massive boost to their funds this week,
when Dunsfold Park donated a cheque for £20,000

The Air Ambulance was one of the benefiting charities for Wings and Wheels, which took place last August.

A record number of spectators flocked to the aerodrome to watch air displays, including a Hurricane, The Great War Display Team, Eurofighter Typhoon and the show were closed by the mesmerizing The Red Arrows. On the ground, there were displays from motoring classics.

The Surrey Air Ambulance is based at Dunsfold Park, and visitors were able to see the Air Ambulance and meet the pilots, doctors and paramedics who fly on the helicopter.

Jim McAllister, Event Promoter, comments:

“Wings & Wheels 2009 demonstrated just how popular the Air show has become. It’s no longer a local show but has evolved into one of the UK’s leading Air shows with visitors coming the length and breadth of the UK.

“Making the decision to become a 2-day show is our response to this success and also allows us, as organisers, to ensure that we are putting on the very best event in the air, on the ground and by providing our visitors an excellent experience that’s value for money.”

Wings and Wheels will take place over the Bank Holiday weekend on Sunday 29th and Monday 30th August this year and promises to be an even bigger and better extravaganza with an exciting line-up of flying and motoring demonstrations.

John Tickner, Chief Executive of Surrey Air Ambulance said ‘The Rutland Group, who operate Dunsfold Park have been incredibly supportive ever since we opened our base there in 2007. This donation of £20,000 will make an incredible difference to us and we are very grateful to Jim McAllister and his team for their support.’

Surrey Air Ambulance responds to serious medical emergencies, 365 days a year. It costs £1.7 million to fund the service, which is supported almost entirely by donations from the public.

Chiddingfold Parish Council lead the way for
Air Ambulance Go Green!

Your old clothes and shoes can now be turned into money and you can help the environment!
L W Sait & Sons have launched a new recycling initiative which will help to raise funds for the Surrey Air Ambulance.
On Monday, Councillors from Chiddingfold Parish Council took delivery of the first clothes and shoe recycling bank at their Coxcombe Lane recreation ground car park.
Parish Council Chairman, Cllr Richard Hogsflesh, said “ With an expected annual minimum return to the Surrey Air Ambulance Fund of £750, the council decided that this was an excellent scheme to aid the air ambulance service as they have been called to assist residents on more than one occasion. In addition to providing financial support for the Surrey Air Ambulance, without using public funds, we are pleased to be able to support the environment by providing a local recycling bank for clothing and shoes. Residents would otherwise have to travel some miles to the next nearest facility. ”

Jonathan Sait from L W Sait & Sons said “Every year the nation throws away around 1,500,000 tonnes of textiles. By launching this recycling scheme, we are not only diverting more waste from landfill sites, but also offering a simple and effective way of raising funds for a vital service that helps so many people and saves lives. We would like to place more bins in the County and would love to hear from any business that would be able to help us do this ”.

Last year was a busy year operationally for the Surrey Air Ambulance. It flew a total of 694 missions and carried 96 patients. Of these, 46% were road traffic crashes and 13% medical emergencies.

However, whatever the the skills of the Air Ambulance’s medical team has made a significant difference to the patients that they have carried, some of whom would not be alive today, had they not received the assistance of the Surrey Air Ambulance.

Julie Jenkinson, County Fundraiser, had this to say. “Since our launch in 2007 Chiddingfold Parish Council and local residents have given us incredible support. We are delighted that they are the first to implement this new fundraising initiative in Surrey, to help raise the £1.7 million we need to keep the Air Ambulance flying. We cannot thank them enough and hope more venues will be forthcoming.”

New Year, New Mission

(LtoR) Air Ambulance Paramedics
Richard de Coverly and Gary Balderston

As Surrey prepares to detox after the festive season, the Surrey Air Ambulance is encouraging people to get out of their arm chairs, dust off the post Christmas blues and to get fit in preparation for the British 10k London Run in July.

The life-saving charity has places available for people to run and every entrant is encouraged to raise a minimum of £300 (three hundred pounds) for the charity.

The event on Sunday 11th July 2010 is one of the favourite routes for runners and is staged in one of the world’s greatest cities. The route of the Official ASICS British 10K London Run takes entrants past many of the world renowned historic landmarks. Much of the course forms part of the same as the route for 2012 London Olympic Marathon.

A team of staff and fundraisers took part in the 2009 British London 10k and raised nearly £3000 for the charity.

Gary Balderston, Air Ambulance Critical Care Paramedic, said: “We had such a great time running as part of a team. The atmosphere was brilliant, and running past some of those landmarks we all know was actually quite an experience. It was a great route and we were all tired afterwards, but doing it for a worthy cause, made it seem very easy. I have to admit it was a good job I did some training for it, otherwise it would have been a lot harder.”

Julie Jenkinson, County Fundraiser said: “Our guys had a great time and the crowds made it very special. We’re always really chuffed when people test their fitness and stamina for us. The proceeds from events such as this go towards the future of this vital service in the county”.

A Year of Pain to Save Lives

(LtoR) Steve Breslin and Chris Hicks

(LtoR) Steve Breslin,
HEMS Doctor – Nigel Raghunath
and Chris Hicks

Two Surrey lads say their New Year resolution will bring them personal pain for twelve months as they raise money to help the Surrey Air Ambulance save lives.

25 year-old Steve Breslin from Clapham in London and 31 year-old Chris Hicks from Ellison Way, Tongham near Guildford are planning on completing an extreme set of personal challenges - one a month over the next year. The challenges will see their personal fitness put to the test and they say often ‘taken to the limit.’

The pair who work together at KBR in Leatherhead as ‘Mechanical Engineers’ have a gruelling schedule that they say would make even Bear Grylls’ eyes water at the prospect. Included in the ‘Year of Pain’ is the inaugural Brighton Marathon in April and an ‘Iron Man Challenge’ in August, that will see the lads swim 2.4 miles, cycle 112 miles and run 26.2 miles – this particular challenge is expected to take the pair between 12-14 hours to complete.

Steve Breslin said: “We are both fit in our own way, Chris has already completed three marathons and plays football, I’m into my cycling and have a 34 mile round trip to work every day, so we’re both in relatively good shape. However the next 12 months are going to prove very tough. I’m not a long distant runner so I’ve got a personal challenge ahead of me. There are some real fitness tests coming up and we’re going to use the next few weeks to get ourselves as ready as we can be.”

Another of the challenges that the pair, who have worked together for 18 months, will take part in is the cross channel swim from Dover.

Chris Hicks said: “We’re both pretty determined to do this, both as a pair but as individuals too. I’m not sure how much of it we can complete together – but as a pair we want to raise as much for the air ambulance as we possibly can. Our target is about £10,000 (ten thousand pounds). This certainly wasn’t a spur of the moment thing. We’ve wanted to do this for sometime now – to test ourselves. The reason we chose the air ambulance is that I recently heard a radio advert for the charity that explained a bit about what it did and I was totally shocked it got almost all its funds from the public. This fund raising for the Surrey Air Ambulance is a little like paying for car insurance, you really never know if you’ll need it but it’s the right thing to do.”

Julie Jenkinson, Surrey County Fundraiser said: "The air ambulance crew are always impressed by supporters’ fundraising efforts, whether it’s a sponsored walk, climb or run. However, when these two guys came to the base to explain their year of gruelling challenges, were left in total awe by their personal effort and amazing compassion for the work that goes on here. Chris and Steve are clearly inspirational guys who are driven to succeed and they’re inspired by the life-saving work that our HEMS crew carries out. It is a huge amount of effort but with such a fantastic cause in mind – the pair are clearly great role models - we’re grateful for their support.”

’Strut Your Funky Feet’

The doctors and paramedics of the Surrey Air Ambulance service are calling on schools and businesses across the county to dig out their most outrageous or funkiest footwear this Friday (Friday 25th September 2009) to help raise funds for the charity for ’Funky Footwear Friday – all part of Air Ambulance Week. Last year nearly one hundred schools, colleges and businesses from across the region took part and everyone who wore their ’Funky Footwear’ gave a pound to the emergency service. There are no limits to the kind of footwear - everyone can put on some crazy shoes. PRESS RELEASE – 14/9/09

First Patient Survives and
Becomes a Volunteer

Sian’ s car post accident,

Sian with the Sussex Air Ambulance

Sian Kearney is the first to say she is “lucky"to be alive", in saying that she is certainly making the most of life, since the accident that in her words, "could have been so much worse, if the Surrey Air Ambulance hadn’ t arrived when it did".

It was around 9am on Sunday June 10th 2007 when the 30 year old medical secretary was driving in Caterham, she was on her way to meet her family in Horsham. Sian, an insulin dependant diabetic, suffered a hypo when her blood sugars dropped very low and without warning. It caused her to pass out at the wheel of her brand new car and as a result she ploughed head on into a brick wall at 70 mph. When the emergency services arrived Sian’ s car was on fire, both of her legs were broken and she was unconscious. Sian had also sustained a fractured heel bone. The emergency services at the scene were helped by people living close by and also by other motorists who had witnessed the accident.

Once Sian had been treated at the scene by the HEMS (Helicopter Emergency Medical Service) crew and had certain bones straightened, she was airlifted to the East Surrey Hospital and underwent life saving surgery. Her operation was followed by five days in intensive care and several months in hospital, but more frustratingly for Sian, 10 months in a wheelchair until she was able to take her first steps.

Over the next few months, Sian will undergo her 10th reconstructive surgery operation since the accident – but while she’ s now on the path to recovery - having had endless sessions of physiotherapy, Sian is still in severe pain. However Sian is determined to get her life back to normal, being a keen horse rider she has just had her first riding lesson refresher.

Sian, who was living in Mitcham at the time but has since moved to Sussex, said “I’ d heard of the Surrey Air Ambulance before, but now I’ m always telling my friends about the service and what great work it does. It’ s scary to think what might have been had the Air Ambulance not been there". Sian, who is an Arsenal supporter, has also just signed up to become a volunteer for the Air Ambulance service - to “give something back".

“My accident was life changing – The Surrey Air Ambulance has allowed me make the most of everything I have now".

Schools across Surrey were invited to take part in a free draw with St Peter’ s Primary Farnham, Woking High School Woking, Powell Cordery Primary School Dorking, St Nicholas Redhill and St Ann’ s Heath Junior Virginia Water being the lucky winners.

St Peter’ s Primary received their visit on Tuesday 24th July and Sue Firth Headteacher said “The staff and children were absolutely thrilled to see the air ambulance approaching and a huge cheer went up when the team landed in our top field. All two hundred children met the pilot and crew and had the chance to ask questions about the helicopter and about the sort of incidents that the crew are called out to. We were all delighted that St Peter's School was selected for this visit and it was a truly memorable experience. Thank you all so much"

Julie Jenkinson Surrey County Fundraiser said “We were delighted to offer this unique opportunity to the schools as a way of introducing Surrey’ s first Air Ambulance. The crew have had a thoroughly enjoyable time visiting the schools and have been amazed by the questions they received and the level of understanding the children showed.

Air Ambulance needs a van!

Surrey Air Ambulance is looking for transport, but on the ground this time!

The charity, which operates a Helicopter Emergency Medical Service, attends events all over the County to raise awareness and funds for the Air Ambulance. They are looking for a business partner to help them to set up a stock delivery and collection service to volunteers throughout Surrey, Sussex and Kent.

Head of Fundraising Jill Playle said ‘We are lucky to have a number of volunteers in the South East who attend around two hundred events a year for us, but because we now cover Surrey, East and West Sussex as well as Kent with two helicopters, it is increasingly difficult for us to be able to deliver stock to the volunteers and pick it up after the event over such a large area. Using a van to transport the stock from place to place would be the best solution and a great opportunity for a company to market their own business across the four Counties and be associated with the life saving charity’ .

The new Air Ambulance was launched in June following two years of fundraising and in its first month of operation answered nearly sixty emergency calls. The charity does not receive any government or national lottery funding and relies solely on donations to raise the £3 million a year that it needs to survive.

If you would like to see how your company could benefit from a business relationship with Surrey Air Ambulance either by loaning, leasing or donating a small van which their own branding on, please contact Jill Playle on 01622 833833 or email her at Jillp & kaat.org.uk

PRESS RELEASE – 21/8/07

Rally rallies support for Air Ambulances!

Harley Davidson motor bikes big cheque , helecopter Harley-Davidson® owners attending the 4th annual South of England Rally at the National Shooting Centre at Bisley in Surrey over the first weekend in August raised an incredible £2,319 in support of Air Ambulance operations in the South East.

The rally saw five local chapters of the Harley Owners Group come together and help to save lives by raising vital funds for the Kent, Surrey, Sussex, and Thames Valley & Chiltern Air Ambulances.

David Lewis,Rally Manager, said: “We are particularly pleased to be able to help the Air Ambulances of our region. An Air Ambulance can literally mean the difference between life and death for anybody injured on our roads, but they have a special significance for us because as motorcyclists we are much more at risk of serious injury if we are involved in a road traffic accident. Many people do not realise that the Air Ambulances rely entirely on charitable donations from the public to fund their flying operations. We adopted these Air Ambulances as our official rally charity in 2006 because their operational area maps cover the territory of the 5 chapters that organise the rally, and we hope to be able to continue supporting them for many years to come."

Surrey County Fundraiser for the Air Ambulances, Julie Jenkinson, added “Everybody had a great time at the rally. This is the second year that the Air Ambulances have benefited from being the official rally charity and we could not have been more delighted.

Our thanks go to the rally organisers for inviting us, to Harley-Davidson® Europe and Harley Rider Insurance Services for their great support, to the Harley-Davidson® dealerships and other traders who donated prizes to our raffle, and to all the rally-goers who bought raffle tickets."

Julie Jenkinson County Fundraiser said “We are looking for people who can spare just a few hours a month in their local area to help organise or help at events, place and empty collection boxes, attend cheque presentations or carry out talks, if you would like to find out more then come along to our volunteers ‘drop in’ on Tuesday 11th September at the base on Dunsfold Park"

Induction and training is given to all volunteers and expenses are paid.

PRESS RELEASE – 03/09/07

Man hit by two trains!

Surrey Air Ambulance was called to a serious incident on Wednesday afternoon,
when a man in his thirties was hit by two trains at Leatherhead railway station.

The man believed to be a railway worker was dragged 100 metres down the line and suffered severe head, chest and limb injuries

and lost critical amounts of blood.
The Air Ambulance arrived in ten minutes from their base at Dunsfold where the crew gave the man intensive care at the scene.

This was one of the most serious incidents that the Air Ambulance has attended since it launched at the new base in June.

Zane Perkins, the specialist doctor from the Air Ambulance said ‘This was probably the most demanding challenge that we have faced so far on the HEMS (Helicopter Emergency Medical Service) unit because he had multiple critical injuries.

The man was transported to a dedicated trauma unit in London where his condition is critical.

Surrey Air Ambulance is funded entirely by public donations and receives no funding from the government or national lottery.

As a resident of Surrey, I am well aware of the need for an Air Ambulance in the County and I was very pleased to be able to support the charity’ .

The day was sponsored by White & Co Estate Agents and generated over £11,500 for the Surrey Air Ambulance who intend to repeat the event next year and encourage even more teams to take part.

Early Christmas present for Surrey

You can take a virtual tour of the new helicopter
by visiting the website at www.surreyairanbulance.co.uk
The life saving Air Ambulance service for Surrey took delivery of its new helicopter on Saturday. The state of the art MD 902 Explorer is a sister helicopter to the one based at Marden which serves Kent and is fitted with the latest medical and electronic mapping equipment.

The service was launched in June this year with a Bolkow helicopter, following a successful appeal to bring a dedicated Helicopter Emergency Medical Service to the County.

Operations manager John Tickner said ‘It has always been our intention to upgrade the helicopter to an Explorer. There are very few of this type of aircraft available and we are delighted to have finally taken delivery. The unique no tail rotor design, higher payload and more cabin space and of course its speed make it a much better aircraft for Air Ambulance work.’

Surrey Air Ambulance which augments the existing emergency medical services in the county has answered over 200 medical emergencies since June with its specialist doctor and critical care paramedic.

PRESS RELEASE – 23/03/09

Air Ambulances Thank You

Photo: Left back Dr. Zane Perkins
. Rob Horne (centre) with his hand on father, Graham’ s shoulder.
Members of the public who attended the Surrey Air Ambulance Annual General Meeting last week were moved to tears by the story of a young man whose life was saved by the life saving service.

The meeting began with the usual formalities conducted by the charity’ s Chairman, Tony Monteuuis and was followed by a presentation covering a case study of the patient, by Doctor Zane Perkins. The patient, Rob Horne had suffered multiple injuries in a serious road traffic crash. The emergency services and doctor on the scene when the Air Ambulance landed told the crew that they were probably too late.

Despite this, Zane and the Air Ambulance paramedic Neil Painter, made their own assessment of Rob. After spending 55 minutes working on him at the scene, Rob was flown to the Royal London Hospital where he would receive the specialist treatment that he needed to give him the best chance of survival. Rob was in a coma for six weeks and spent many more months convalescing, and on Wednesday made a surprise appearance at the AGM with his family to say thank you.

Rob’ s story is not unique, on average the charities two Air Ambulances covering Kent, Surrey and Sussex see serious medical emergencies of this nature at least once a week. The speed of the helicopter and combination of a specialist doctor and paramedic team gives patients with life threatening injuries the best possible chance of survival.

Rob’ s father, Graham fought back the emotion when he was asked if he saw any change in Rob since the accident. He went on to say how grateful he is to the Air Ambulance and tell the audience how he and his family have raised thousands of pounds for the charity.

Chief Executive of Surrey Air Ambulance, David Philpott said ‘People see the helicopter in the air and hear about it through their newspapers, radio and television, but it isn’ t until stories like Rob’ s are told that the public realizes the true value of the work we do. Rob’ s appearance at the meeting was very emotional and we are grateful to him and his family for all the support that they continue to give us.’

It cost £1.6 million a year to fund the Air Ambulance in Surrey. The money is raised almost entirely by the public. The charity does not receive and statutory government or national lottery funding.

Thousands support Air Ambulance at Open Day

The sun shone and over 2,000 visitors flooded through the gates for the Surrey Air Ambulance Open Day on Sunday.

As the crowds gathered to watch a demonstration by the emergency services, the Air Ambulance was called away to deal with a real emergency in East Sussex. The mock car crash and entrapment, demonstrated how the 999 services work with the Air Ambulance in real situations.

The Magog Morris Dancers and a model air flying display, kept the public entertained, while the Women’ s Institute provided refreshments and queues formed for ice creams!

The Air Ambulance returned later, having treated a man with a serious head injury who was flown to a London hospital, and after a call to a near drowning en route back to the base.

Surrey Air Ambulance was for the second year, opening its doors so that the public can see the vital difference that their donations make to the operation of the service, and to thank their many supporters.

It costs £1.6 million a year to continue to provide providing this life saving service for the people of Surrey.
Julie Jenkinson County Fundraiser said “It was an amazing day such a great team effort, staff, crew and volunteers working together; I cannot thank them enough for all their hard work. The day could not have gone better, our thanks go to all the exhibitors, to the ladies of the Surrey WI who raised over £800 through the sale of their teas and cakes and especially to all our visitors who came along and helped make the day such a huge success"

At time of going to press more than £5,000 had been raised for the Air Ambulance on the day and the final figure is expected to be nearer £10,000 because costs were kept to a minimum due to the many donations of time and goods.
The Air Ambulance service in Kent, Surrey and Sussex costs around £3 million annually to stay airborne. Receiving no funds from the government or the National Lottery the charity is entirely dependent upon the generosity of the public to support the two helicopters, based at Marden and Dunsfold.
